Unit description

Introduces students to the cultural heritage of the Bundjalung traditional owners of the NSW north coast. Encourages students to view the concept of cultural heritage as being holistic and diverse.  Gives an insight into cultural heritage as something not just limited to sites but which is inextricably linked to virtually all issues facing Bundjalung communities.  Presents cultural heritage as a continuum rather than a thing of the past.  Students will explore the evolution of Bundjalung cultural heritage from pre-invasion to the present.

Unit content

Topic 1: Pre-invasion Bundjalung country: the basis of Bundjalung cultural and social order.
Topic 2: Pre-invasion economic life: bush foods and medicine.
Topic 3: The invasion of Bundjalung country and its effect on Bundjalung cultural and social order.
Topic 4: Field Trip.
Topic 5: Government policies: ‘protectionism’ and assimilation; a case study on the stolen generation.
Topic 6: Indigenous rights to Bundjalung country: Land Rights legislation and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council system.
Topic 7: Common Law recognition of Indigenous rights to land: Mabo and Native Title, the Wik decision.
Topic 8: Bundjalung Native Title rights: case studies of the Arakwal Native Title determination and the Cape Byron Recreation Area decision.
Topic 9: Bundjalung cultural heritage: the role of the NPWS and a case study of the Iron Gates residential development at Evans Head.
Topic 10: Health and housing in Bundjalung.
