Unit description

Introduces students to other Indigenous cultures throughout the world.  Explores the impacts of colonialism on these cultures and the parallels of invasion, dispossession, massacre, marginalisation and government intervention. Introduces students to examples of Indigenous self-determination in areas of education, health and law. In the context of Indigenous empowerment, students will be exposed to various approaches adopted around the world for Indigenous cultural survival and rejuvenation.

Unit content

Topic 1: Discuss and debate the definition of Indigenous identity and First Nationhood
Topic 2: Identify and locate First Nations (Indigenous) peoples of the world
Topic 3: Pre-colonial Indigenous world views
Topic 4: Impact of colonisation on Indigenous peoples and culture
Topic 5: Comparison of international Indigenous socio-economic indicators
Topic 6: International Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty
Topic 7: The United Nations and Indigenous rights
Topic 8: International networking of  Indigenous peoples
Topic 9: Racism and Indigenous peoples
