Unit description

This is the first of two placement units, marking the transition from learning in the classroom setting to working as counselling professionals with clients, peers and supervisors in the general community.  Students are required to spend a minimum of 100 hours internship at a counselling agency. In addition to placement experiences, students attend a combination of individual and group supervision sessions with experienced practitioners allocated by the University. This unit highlights the importance of regular supervision in counselling practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

develop and maintain professional and ethical relationships with clients, colleagues and supervisors

apply evidence-based counselling theory and accompanying counselling skills, contextualised to specific clinical presentations

demonstrate competence in the assessment of client issues, producing clear, coherent and evidence-based case conceptualisations and client case conceptualisations

display cultural competence, evidenced by awareness of and sensitivity to a range of multicultural factors
