    All students are required to meet compulsory participation requirements to pass the unit. Online students must attend a 2 day on-campus residential.


Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

understand differences in individual, couple, family systems, structure, developmental stages and changes and counselling approaches

assess family and couple dynamics in counselling settings using case conceptualisations

identify ethical and legal issues when working with families and couples

recognise commonly presenting issues in family work, couple work, and be able to identify and select effective counselling interventions
