Unit description

This unit focuses on the contextual and theoretical understanding of addiction and addiction treatment, and the application of counselling skills to work with clients who have addiction related needs.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss co-occurring addictions and mental health issues

identify specific assessment and referral skills for counselling clients effectively within the context of addictions

analyse ethical and legal issues when working in the area of addictions including alcohol and other drugs

apply effective strategies for treatment and relapse prevention
