Unit description

This foundational unit introduces students to counselling skills to develop foundational levels of counselling competence, supported by key skills required for effective clinical practice. The Rogerian Humanistic Counselling approach is woven throughout this unit

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

conceptualise counselling as a client-centred, relationally-oriented and recovery-focused process

co-create and sustain a therapeutic alliance demonstrating an emerging capacity for empathy, positive regard and a non-judgemental stance

apply a range of foundational counselling skills within counselling sessions

reflect on the process of counselling, including their own professional practice
