Unit description

This unit introduces the basic principles of object-oriented programming using a standard programming language and a learning environment. Students will gain a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of the programming process, including the ability to write and debug programs, stepwise refine code, use object-oriented development, develop appropriate algorithms and write modularised code using methods. Emphasis in the unit is at all times on a sound understanding of the principles involved, with particular attention being paid to worked examples to demonstrate these principles in a clear and straightforward fashion.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

use development environments to build object-oriented programs

analyse the behaviours of programs that use programming constructs

apply recognised code refactoring best practices to improve performance and maintainability

design and implement classes and methods that promote modularity, reusability, and extensibility in object-oriented programs.
