Unit description

The unit provides the student with an overall understanding of database concepts and theory. Students will learn how to design and build a database, from data analysis to mapping a specific database model. Both the relational and non-relational models are introduced, along with the use of common structured queried language (SQL) queries for accessing databases in the cloud. Microsoft Azure will be used to familiarise students with developing and implementing databases in the cloud, using data analytics, and preparing for the Microsoft Azure Data Fundamentals certification exam.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Describe core data concepts and identify considerations for working with relational and non-relational data

Write and execute SQL queries for relational databases

Design, develop and test the functionality of a simple database in the cloud

Apply cloud-based data services including analytics for relational and non-relational data solutions.
