Unit description

Gives students an introduction to the core principles of governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) with a focus on fundamental cybersecurity concepts. It covers the basics of technical, human, and legal aspects of cybersecurity, enabling students to define and identify key security measures, mechanisms, and services essential for protecting enterprise information systems, whether managed internally or by external providers. This unit also prepares students for the Microsoft security, compliance, and Identity fundamentals certification exam.

Module 1:  Cybersecurity basics and governance frameworks

Module 2:  Security for hosts, data, and applications

Module 3: Securing distributed and cloud-based systems

Module 4:  Human factors, ethics, and privacy in cybersecurity

Module 5:  Introduction to the concepts of Microsoft security, compliance, and Identity

Module 6:  Microsoft tools for security, compliance, and identity capabilities

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain key cybersecurity principles, focusing on their role in securing organisational data, systems, and networks from cyber threats

analyse cyber threats and mitigation techniques

analyse cyber security laws and ethics, as well as administration processes

explain the key concepts of security, compliance, and identity, and demonstrate the ability to work with cloud services for effective data protection, regulatory compliance, and secure access management.
