Unit description

Builds on students' existing English language abilities in reading, writing, speaking and listening to develop advanced language skills appropriate for postgraduate study (i.e at IELTS 6.5/CEFR B2+ and above). Students will engage in a range of learning activities which will develop their academic skills and practices, including digital and information literacies essential for success in postgraduate studies. Students will also learn how to practice academic integrity in their work.

Unit content

Advanced English language skills and practices appropriate for postgraduate study (i.e. IELTS 6.5/CEFR B2+ and above) including:

  • Academic writing genres: essays, annotated bibliography, and reports
  • A range of grammatical structures and vocabulary common in academic language
  • A range of discourse markers and cohesive structures common in academic language
  • Academic integrity practices relating to text ownership and authorship (e.g. paraphrase, in-text citation and referencing)
  • Digital literacy tools and practices: understanding, as well as appropriately using, and communicating with multimedia technology

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding and control of a range of written academic texts appropriate for postgraduate study.

Use a range of academic vocabulary and grammatical structures to communicate ideas in writing, at a level appropriate for postgraduate study.

Demonstrate an understanding of academic integrity practices involving text ownership and authorship, through appropriate use of paraphrase, in-text citation and referencing.

Use a range of digital literacy tools and practices to appropriately access, assess and disseminate on-line information.
