Unit description

Applies knowledge of chronic disease management to the role of the diabetes educator within the primary healthcare team. Students will gain advanced knowledge and skill with nutrition therapy for diabetes, diabetes medications and insulin therapies, including beginning practice with insulin pump therapy. Students identify the issues associated with chronic disease within the community, and demonstrate advanced knowledge of comorbidities, referral procedures, and scope of practice of the diabetes educator and other team members within the primary healthcare team including dietitians, optometrists, podiatrists, exercise physiologists, and psychologists.
