Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

construct a solution using a systems approach to address a complex problem related to steel and timber structures

assess and creatively apply advanced engineering methods, techniques, tools and resources to formulate solutions to a complex problem related to steel and timber structures

choose, define, manage and communicate the outcomes from a complex project related to steel and timber structures

self-evaluate conduct and performance as a professional engineer in contributing to the successful completion of a complex project related to steel and timber structures.

critically evaluate design loads using structural analysis based on strength and serviceability limit states, and analyse the properties of steel and timber

perform calculations necessary for the design of beams, tension, compression and beam-column members, and connections in steel and timber structures following Australian Standards.
