Unit description

This unit introduces students to the application of a systems-based engineering approach to design of road transport systems. A scenario-based learning approach is used to guide students in applying a range of practical tools and techniques along with skills in systems analysis, engineering design and project management to a real industry-based engineering project.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse problems related to road transport systems using practical knowledge of surveying, earthworks, pavement design, and traffic management

analyse transportation data including traffic flow patterns and GIS data for informed decision-making in the planning and designing urban road networks and intersections

develop and communicate the outcomes of a comprehensive project related to road transport systems

evaluate management and social skills, and professional judgment in contributing to completing a well-defined project in road transport systems

analyse the effects of emerging technologies, including autonomous vehicles and smart traffic systems, on the planning and operation of future road transport networks

design road transport systems by integrating road layouts, geometric design, pavement structures, and drainage solutions.
