Unit description

This unit examines the practical application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies and processes for the development and delivery of construction projects. The role of the project manager, contractor, design team and BIM Manager in the development and use of building information models is explored. This includes the effective management and control of information contained in discipline-specific 3D models. Students develop an in-depth understanding of BIM uses and BIM implementation. The subject also examines the issues and problems that are inhibiting the widespread application of BIM in the industry.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

compare and contrast the principles of Building Information Modelling systems

integrate building information modelling processes in construction projects

design buildings using building information modelling tools

apply proficient communication skills required for professional practice in the construction industry.

combine parametric modelling with clash detection to enhance building designs and prevent construction conflicts

collaborate with others to complete a building information modelling project and critically reflect on and justify own professional conduct and performance
