Unit description

Introduces the fundamental principles of design of concrete structures. Students will learn how to analyse, design and detail reinforced concrete sections for buildings, including beams, columns, slabs and foundations using limit states design. Students will also gain an understanding of concrete reinforcing design and inspection.

General concepts of reinforced concrete structures

Loads and limit states design of reinforced concrete structures

Design of reinforced concrete beams, slabs, columns and pad foundations

Detailing, anchorage and curtailment of reinforced concrete structures

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

design and detail, using engineering sketches, a range of reinforced concrete members including beams, slabs and columns

demonstrate an understanding of limit states design concepts and apply this to the design of concrete structures.
