Introduces the behaviour of solid objects when subjected to loads. Students will learn methods used for calculating internal stresses and strains in solid materials.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply appropriate methods to calculate internal stresses and strains in basic structures

demonstrate a basic understanding of the buckling behaviour of compression members

demonstrate the ability to analyse a beam structure and understand its internal behaviour under bending.
