Unit description

Introduces the subject of fluid mechanics as it applies to water in civil engineering applications. Students will learn basic principles of fluid mechanics including fluid properties, effects of viscosity, static and dynamic pressures, energy and momentum principles, the principle of continuity, and energy loss in pipes and open channels.

Learning outcomes

define the basic properties of fluids relevant to engineering analysis

calculate the forces acting in a static fluid

describe and apply the laws of continuity, conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to perform simple analyses of fluid flows in pipes and open channels.
