This is an advanced unit that requires essential skills from earlier units, including including statistics and probability distributions, employing engineering processes to solve real world engineering problems and report writing. These skills are provided by the pre-requisite units or equivalent experience.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
demonstrate an in-depth understanding of traffic engineering and the contextual factors which influence decision making within the discipline
analyse traffic and transport systems including traffic variables such as travel demand, existing traffic volumes, traffic generation and distribution, intersection analysis, road capacity analysis, saturation and level of service
use traffic analysis software to analyse a traffic engineering problem
identify, formulate and solve traffic problems using established traffic engineering methods, creativity, innovation and pre-emptive approaches
understand critical elements in road safety and identify practical preventative measures to address road safety issues
explain traffic related professional and ethical responsibilities including road safety.
