Introduces students to the geotechnical properties and behaviour of soils and their significance in civil and construction engineering.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe the basic physical and mechanical properties of wet and dry soil and determine these properties using standard laboratory methods

apply the principles of soil stabilisation

apply the principles of earthworks construction.

describe the fundamentals of subsurface exploration
