Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
identify common organic functional groups and describe their chemical and physical properties
explain the chemistry, the reactions, the methods of analysis, and the biological significance of selected organic compounds
solve problems related to organic chemical reactions
describe and employ laboratory methods and techniques to evaluate chemical and physical properties of organic substances
Prescribed learning resources
- No prescribed texts.
The following items will be required to attend each laboratory class:
- White lab coat - available at the Co-op Bookshop.
- Shoes - must have a sturdy sole and fully cover heels, toes, sides and upper surface of feet.
- Safety glasses - available at Co-op Bookshop. Safety glasses must be worn when performing experiments that involve the use of chemical solvents and reagents. If you wear prescription glasses, safety glasses must be worn over them.
Students will need a scientific calculator and graph paper to report experimental results where appropriate. Gloves are provided and recommended for use during laboratory activities. Notes/instructions for the laboratory experiments will be provided on the Blackboard learning site.
Students who do not meet the OH&S requirements will not be admitted to the laboratory.
Prescribed Learning Resources may change in future Teaching Periods.
