Unit description

Introduces students to the basic principles of organic chemistry through study of the structure-function relationships of organic compounds, the chemistry of functional groups, and reactions of organic compounds.  The principles of laboratory techniques and methods used to manipulate and analyse organic compounds will be studied.

  • Orbitals, hybridisation and bonding
  • Hydrocarbons: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds
  • Isomerism and stereochemistry
  • Organic chemical reactions and reaction mechanisms
  • Alcohols, phenols, ethers, and thiols
  • Aldehydes and ketones
  • Chemical structure of carbohydrates
  • Carboxylic acids and their derivatives
  • Amines and heterocyclic compounds

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

identify common organic functional groups and describe their chemical and physical properties.

interpret and draw various structural formulas of organic compounds and when present, describe their stereochemistry

solve problems related to organic chemical reactions and apply selected reaction mechanisms

use laboratory equipment and methods to evaluate chemical and physical properties of organic compounds and report experimental data
