Unit description

Introduces students to the basic principles of organic chemistry through study of the structure-function relationships of organic compounds, the chemistry of functional groups, and reactions of organic compounds.  The principles of laboratory techniques and methods used to manipulate and analyse organic compounds will be studied.

Topic 1: Orbitals, Hybridisation, and Bonding

Topic 2: Alkanes and Cycloalkanes; Conformational & Geometric Isomerism

Topic 3: Stereochemistry

Topic 4: Organic chemical reactions

Topic 5: Alkenes and Alkynes

Topic 6: Aromatic Compounds

Topic 7: Mass, infrared & UV spectrometry; NMR

Topic 8: Reaction mechanisms: Substitution and Elimination

Topic 9: Alcohols, phenols, ethers, and thiols

Topic 10: Aldehydes and ketones

Topic 11: Carboxylic acids and their derivatives.

Topic 12: Amines and Heterocyclic Compounds
