Unit description

This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to haematology, exploring the fundamental principles of blood cell formation, structure, function, and their role in health and disease. This unit is strongly focused on laboratory elements, and students will perform a range of routine pathological tests in the field of haematology that are used in clinical laboratories.  Students will develop skills in clinical diagnosis and laboratory practice, enabling them to evaluate and interpret haematological test results.

1. The role of haematology in healthcare | Haematopoiesis

2. Structure and function of erythrocytes, their regulation, and metabolism | Haemoglobin and iron metabolism

3. Introduction to erythrocytes disorders | Anaemias

4. Leukocyte morphology | Introduction to leukocyte  disorders

5. Coagulation and haemostasis | Introduction to coagulation disorders

6. Haematological infections| Automation principles in haematology

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

effectively communicate the processes involved in the development, regulation and metabolism of blood cells

evaluate morphological characteristics of different blood cell types and their impact on function

interpret basic laboratory results related to common haematological disorders

select and employ relevant laboratory methods and safe practice in the haematology laboratory
