Unit description

Applies specialist knowledge and skills to provide optimal care for clients with acute, chronic and complex presentation of diabetes, including advanced pathophysiology and medications used in  diabetes. Students will demonstrate knowledge showing the impact and relationship with other co morbidities together with an understanding of landmark clinical trials and research in the field of diabetes. Students will also gain advanced knowledge and skill with insulin therapies, including beginning practice with insulin pump therapy.

Topic 1: Diabetes prevalence globally and nationally
Topic 2: Pathophysiology and aetiology of diabetes
Topic 3: Screening and diagnostic criteria
Topic 4: The role of international and national diabetes peak bodies and research
Topic 5: Oral medication in diabetes
Topic 6: Insulin therapies, initiation and dose titration
Topic 7: Evidence based practice
Topic 8: Blood glucose monitoring
Topic 9: Diabetes ketoacidosis and other hyperglycaemia emergencies
Topic 10: Research and landmark trials in the field of diabetes and other co morbidities
Topic 11: Examine the role of insulin pump therapy and other future technological advances
Topic 12: Glucose metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism and physical activity.
