Unit description

Introduces students to the concepts, principles and techniques of microbiology. Students learn practical skills such as staining, aseptic techniques, handling and manipulating microbes and they gain an understanding of the biochemical, morphological and genetic diversity of microbes. This unit provides students with the essential knowledge and skills in microbiology.

Topic 1: Basic Principles of microscopy and staining

Topic 2: Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure

Topic 3: Microbial growth and metabolism

Topic 4: Microbial systematics

Topic 5: Microbial diversity

Topic 6: Control of microorganisms

Topic 7: Industrial and applied microbiology

Topic 8: Microbial genetics including conjugation, transformation, transduction and transposition; and an introduction to the use of prokaryotes in genetic engineering.
