Unit description

Introduces students to the principles of molecular genetics with an emphasis on human disease and an understanding of the key concepts underlying the experimental techniques of DNA manipulations.  Topics include Mendelian genetics, chromosome structure, gene mapping, mutation and DNA repair, molecular population genetics, DNA testing, biotechnology and gene therapy.

Topic 1: Theories of inheritance, including population genetics, evolutionary relationship and Mendelian theories

Topic 2: An introduction to the structure of the human genome

Topic 3: Mapping and sequencing the human genome

Topic 4: Human genetic disease: single-gene disorders

Topic 5: The genetic components of complex diseases

Topic 6: Small RNAs in human genetics

Topic 7: Genetic testing and gene therapy

Topic 8: Approaches to biotechnology

Topic 9: DNA profiling in forensic criminology

Topic 10: Human genetics and society
