Unit description

Unites several related issues concerning the practice of psychology in clinical, health, organisational and educational settings. The unifying theme is the importance of psychological theory and the empirical literature to the analysis, assessment and modification of individual and groups, based on the scientist-practitioner approach.

Unit content

1. The scientist-practitioner approach: features and relevance. 
2. Assessment issues, using the DSM-IV. 
3. Common psychological disorders across the lifespan. 
4. Psychological treatments. 
5. The effects of punishment and racism upon behaviour. 
6. Special target groups for interventions (Indigenous Australians, children, adolescents, adults and families). 
7. Psychotropic medications 
8. Positive psychology 
9. Group dynamics 
10. Mediation 
11. Recovery of function 
12. Neuroplasticity.

Learning outcomes and graduate attributes
