Unit description

Introduces students to digital photographic and imaging techniques, concepts, materials, and processes. Photography and Digital Imaging is designed to develop an approach to digital tools that aligns with contemporary art practices. While this unit provides a practical introduction to the basic digital photography tools and materials there is an emphasis on the creative and experimental potential of these tools and how they are utilised within a broader creative practice.

Module 1: What is Photography? Camera, Lenses, Shutter speed. Aperture and Depth of Field

Module 2: The Nature of Photography: Editing and Presentation

Module 3: The Contingent Image: Adobe Suite Basics, Pixel Ratios and File Sizes

Module 4: Sexuality and Mortality: Critique of the Image

Module 5: Glitching: Printing and On-screen options

Module 6: Data, Automation and Obsolescence: Software and Hardware

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate understanding of the expressive and experimental possibilities of digital photography and imaging technologies

demonstrate understanding of the methods, materials, and equipment used in digital processes, including an understanding of image capture, digital manipulation, and alternative processes

use basic manual camera techniques and compositional methods

criticise and evaluate technical and artistic aspects of their own photographs and the works of others for presentation within a critical context.

  • This unit requires students to have their own camera equipment and Adobe Suit of software programs to complete the tasks. Students will need to have access to Adobe Suite of software programs if they are taking this course online. On campus has provision for access to this software. A full list of equipment required will be available at the beginning of Session.
