Unit description

This unit explores a variety of husbandry and management practices, systems and routine health and management programs for species commonly encountered in veterinary practice. Students will develop an understanding of the importance of biosecurity to animal systems and the significance of economics in animal production and ownership. 

Unit content

  1. General principles of animal husbandry, precision livestock farming, biosecurity, and welfare
  2. Principles of animal husbandry and welfare: dairy cattle
  3. Principles of animal husbandry and welfare: beef cattle
  4. Principles of animal husbandry and welfare: sheep and goats
  5. Principles of animal husbandry and welfare: equine
  6. Principles of animal husbandry and welfare: pigs.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

proficiently and confidently, with minimal supervision, perform a range of animal husbandry and handling techniques on animal species commonly seen in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of appropriate husbandry and management practices, and production cycles, to describe and assess strategies that support optimal welfare, production, and health outcomes for the variety of species commonly encountered in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of biosecurity to describe and assess appropriate protocols for common animal systems encountered in veterinary practice

apply knowledge of animal husbandry and preventive health programs to describe and implement appropriate practices for the variety of species commonly encountered in veterinary practice while engaging in reflective practice.
