    A compulsory 2-day residential component covering both extensive (e.g. broadacre) and intensive (e.g. horticulture) plant production systems. This exercise will allow students to observe and evaluate considerations from each module in real-world scenarios.

Unit description

This unit discovers the scientific principles that underpin plant production and how they are applied to enhance productivity and resilience across diverse farming systems.

Unit content

Module 1:  Crop physiology – how crops sense and respond to their environment

Module 2:  Plant breeding and genotype by environment

Module 3:  Plant nutrition – meeting crop needs

Module 4:  Plant propagation and clean planting schemes

Module 5:  Modifying the environment – irrigation, tillage and protected cropping

Module 6:  Moving the product off-farm – supply chains, processing, waste and marketing

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

describe factors (physiology, genetics and nutritional) that constrain or enable plant growth and farming systems

evaluate agronomic data in cropping and horticulture contexts

appraise how farming systems can be managed to contribute to sustainability and profitability based on site visits

describe the major agricultural production systems and their supply chains.
