Overview

The Undergraduate Qualifying Program (UQP) prepares International students for undergraduate study in the arts, business, tourism and hospitality, accounting, information technology and engineering. It assists students to develop the skills necessary for success at the undergraduate level.

The course combines English language and academic skills development with academic, content-based studies. It is designed for international students whose academic qualifications and/or English proficiency levels are slightly below Southern Cross University’s entry requirements for undergraduate degrees.

Students who successfully complete the Undergraduate Qualifying Program will meet the academic and English language requirements for the following undergraduate degrees: Diploma of Business, Associate Degree of Business, Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Digital Business, Diploma of Science, Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Digital Media and Communications.

Students who successfully complete the UQP will be granted two units of credit towards these courses.

Nursing and allied health stream

A specialised pathway into nursing and allied health (occupational therapy and podiatry only) degrees is available for students with an English language score comparable to Academic IELTS 6.5, with no band less than 6.0. Graduates of the UQP in this stream qualify for direct entry into the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and the Bachelor of Podiatry at Southern Cross University. No advanced standing is included in this pathway.

Please note: the nursing and allied health stream is only available in session 3 at Lismore campus.

English Language Proficiency (General English + English for Academic Purposes) and two units from a selection of undergraduate degrees offered by the School of Business and Tourism. Topics could include accounting, finance, economics, business law, statistics, marketing, management, ethics and sustainability.

Tuition fees are in Australian dollars, and are subject to change, including annual increases over the duration of a course. Annual tuition fee is based on completing 8 units per year. In addition, students are required to pay OSHC for the duration of their visa in advance. Non-tuition fee covers textbooks, stationery and excursions.

Entry requirements

An education qualification recognised as equivalent to having successfully completed Australian Year 11; and, be a minimum of 18 years old at the start of the program.

Applicants for admission to candidature to the Undergraduate Qualifying Program must have an assessable entry qualification from a country where English is the main language and where the medium of instruction for that qualification was English; or, for all Undergraduate Qualifying streams (apart from the Nursing stream)  have completed an International English Language Test (or comparable test scores*) with:

  • a minimum overall score of 5.5 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each subtest (or comparable test scores*) for 15 weeks English for Academic Purposes ENG10002 concurrent with academic units

Undergraduate Qualifying Program  (Nursing and Allied Health stream), applicants must have:

  • a minimum overall score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each subtest (or comparable test scores*) for 15 weeks English for Academic Purposes ENG10002 concurrent with academic units

* comparable scores include SCU College Placement Test scores, CPE, CAE, and TOEFL PBT (see scu.edu.au/englishskills)

Course requirements

To meet the requirements of this program students must complete 3 units, comprising:

  • 2 core units, and
  • 1 elective unit.

In this program, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes are held every weekday, Monday to Friday throughout the session. EDU10010 and elective award units are typically after the EAP classes in the same session.

At Lismore campus, EAP classes are typically from 9:00am to 2:00pm with self-study from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. At Gold Coast campus EAP classes are typically from 8:30am to 1:15am, or 1:30pm to 6:15pm followed by an hour of self-study.
