Overview

Do you want to make a difference to the way mental health services are designed, funded and delivered in Australia? This course is designed specifically for allied health and social care professionals who wish to increase their employment outcomes, particularly in mental health leadership and management roles.

This course responds to contemporary mental health research and policy and has been designed with the input of leading clinical and academic mental health professionals.

Undertaking this course will enhance your clinical capabilities and theoretical knowledge of both current and future mental health practice, for the benefit of mental health service users and the wider community. You will develop skills in empathic engagement with people across the stepped care continuum, a critical view of the mental health system in Australia and the knowledge to be able to play a leadership role in its transformation and improvement, as well as skills in assessment, problem formulation, care planning and the provision of psychological strategies to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Each unit runs for seven weeks with six study periods per year and the course is offered exclusively online.

Please note: this course can be completed in two years of accelerated (continuous) part-time study.

Course Learning Outcome

GA1: Intellectual rigour

Evaluate, integrate and apply advanced treatment models across the mental health care continuum to co-construct personalised, evidence-informed care strategies that address both the life and health needs of consumers.

Generate, translate and apply new knowledge, theories or evidence through scholarly inquiry, making a significant contribution to the advancement of the mental health discipline.

GA2: Creativity

Apply advanced therapeutic capabilities to design and sustain creative, collaborative and co-constructed relationships with consumers, families and significant others, integrating complex interpersonal and clinical knowledge.

Critically analyse and synthesise the complex social, political, economic and organisational factors that shape clinical decision-making, and design advanced strategies to negotiate and overcome constraints in mental health interventions.

GA3: Ethical practice

Demonstrate leadership in advocacy by critically analysing and challenging discriminatory structures and public discourse, and by implementing evidence-informed strategies that reduce stigma and promote social inclusion, autonomy and independence for mental health consumers.

Critically interrogate, challenge and synthesise risk and safety frameworks through a consumer-centred, ethically grounded lens, integrating legal, moral and social protection principles to support balanced recovery-oriented practice.

GA4: Knowledge of a discipline

Exercise expert clinical judgement and high-level decision-making in complex, ambiguous and novel mental health contexts to optimise consumer outcomes.

Demonstrate advanced leadership in negotiating, articulating and enacting the mental health role within multidisciplinary and interprofessional environments to improve service integration and consumer outcomes.

GA5: Lifelong learning

Exhibit mastery of professional autonomy, accountability, adaptability and self-directed learning through sustained, independent inquiry and reflective practice that informs ongoing professional development.

Lead and facilitate collaborative, critical reflection on mental health practice to generate insights that enhance professional capability, contribute to quality improvement and foster lifelong learning for self and others.

GA6: Communication and social skills

Lead the development and stewardship of collaborative partnerships with consumers, families and groups, ensuring care is grounded in consumer rights, self-determination and recovery-oriented principles.

Employ advanced and authoritative communication practices, including sophisticated use of information technologies, to construct compelling, coherent and credible clinical and scholarly outputs.

GA7: Cultural competence

Critically reflect on and evaluate diverse world views, including one’s own, to enhance culturally responsive practice and to lead others in questioning and reframing underlying assumptions in mental health care.

Critically integrate advanced cultural, social and contextual knowledge to adapt and transform mental health practices, ensuring interventions are responsive to consumers’ cultural perspectives and lived experiences.

None required but a background of working within mental health settings would be an advantage.

Core units focus on contemporary mental health theory and practice, physical healthcare needs, evidence-based case formulation and common interventions within acute care contexts, in primary mental health as well contemporary applications of developmental psychology and psychological therapies.

You will also choose an elective from a diverse range of subjects that include leadership, management, human resources and organisational issues in mental health settings.
