Overview

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is an established component of Australian healthcare. It is also a rapidly growing industry, currently worth more than A$4.7 billion in Australia, and $83 billion globally.

Given the increasing demand, there is a need to build a CAM workforce that not only has the capability to support this growth, but is able to effectively meet the health care needs of a growing population through the provision of quality health care. Naturopathic practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills may be well positioned to meet these needs.

Delivered through the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM), the Master of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine is ideal for both recent graduates of naturopathic programs and experienced naturopathic practitioners wishing to extend their skills in specialised areas of practice, as well as research, critical thinking, clinical reasoning, integrative health care and evidence-based practice.

The University has a long history in the discipline of naturopathy and was the first in Australia to open a naturopathy clinic on campus in 1998.

Course Learning Outcome

GA1: Intellectual rigour

Demonstrate expert judgement of the interplay between traditional and scientific knowledge within naturopathic medicine.

Demonstrate application of research and evidence-based practice processes in clinical and professional contexts, from research inquiry through to evidence implementation.

GA2: Creativity

Apply innovative, creative and effective responses to the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge in professional practice of naturopathic medicine.

GA3: Ethical practice

Integrate ethical and legal principles into practice-relevant health research project.

GA4: Knowledge of a discipline

Critically apply established naturopathic theories, philosophies and principles to professional naturopathic medicine practice and research development.

GA5: Lifelong learning

Demonstrate autonomy, well developed independent judgement, adaptability and responsibility as a learner, researcher and practitioner.

GA6: Communication and social skills

Communicate concisely and appropriately in an oral and written forms in academic, professional and health care settings.

Critically analyse, reflect on and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories for ongoing, self-directed lifelong learning.

GA7: Cultural competence

Integrate physical, social, political, ecological and cultural influences that impact health and wellbeing in all members of society to clinical and research contexts.

Examine contemporary naturopathic medicine practice within the context of different integrative healthcare models.

You will study five core units in naturopathic philosophy, research and evidence-based practice:

  • Critical Perspectives in Naturopathic Philosophy
  • Evidence Translation and Implementation
  • Practice-Based Health Research
  • Health Research Project A
  • Health Research Project B.

You'll also choose three electives to deepen your knowledge in specialist areas:

  • Cognition and the Healthy Brain
  • Integrative Mental Health
  • Integrative Gastroenterology
  • Gut Microbiome and Health
  • Integrative Women's Health
  • Integrative Reproductive Health
  • Food as Medicine
  • Foundations of Clinical Hypnosis.

To be eligible to receive the Master of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine, students must complete the equivalent of 8 single weighted units (96 credit points) comprising:

  • 5 core units (60 credit points); and
  • 3 option units (36 credit points)
