This course prepares students to teach and work with primary school children aged from five to 12 years. Graduates are well prepared for professional practice.

This course prepares students to teach and work with primary school children aged from five to 12 years. Graduates are well prepared for professional practice.

The course includes studies in areas of teaching and learning, professional practice, behaviour management, understanding children and young people, special education, Aboriginal education, information and communications technology, and curriculum studies across six key learning areas.

Students with a distinguished academic record who complete a research unit and an extended project (in accordance with the Award Rules) can graduate with Honours.

During their first year, students are placed in schools to observe teaching and learning, culminating in a block practicum. In-school experiences are included in each year.

This course is approved by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards and is nationally recognised. Graduates meet the qualification requirements for accreditation/registration as a teacher in schools across all Australian states and territories.

Usually, Australian teacher qualifications are recognised internationally, but students need to check with potential employers and teacher registration authorities in other countries regarding accreditation requirements.

Course requirements

See the University’s Rules Relating to Awards, in conjunction with the Specific Award Rules listed below.

To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Education (Primary) a candidate shall successfully complete not less than thirty-two (32) units comprising:

  1. All the units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units; and either
  2. two (2) units listed in Part B of the Schedule OR one (1) double-weighted unit from Part B of the Schedule; and
  3. three (3) units from Part C of the Schedule.
  4. Permission to undertake a practicum will at all times be at the discretion of the Head of School

Bachelor of Education (Primary) with Honours

  1. A candidate for the award of Bachelor of Education (Primary) with Honours shall fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Education (Primary) award, including completion of the unit EDU00550 Understanding Educational Research and the unit EDU10172 Extended Education Project and, in addition, shall achieve such standard of excellence as the School Board may from time to time determine.
  2. For the award of Honours, consideration shall be given to a candidate’s academic record throughout the course of study. A candidate who has reached the required standard of excellence referred to in Honours Rule (a) may on the recommendation of the School Board be awarded Honours in one of the following grades:
    • First Class Honours
    • Second Class Honours – Division I
    • Second Class Honours – Division II
